Your Power Is for Service, Not Intimidation or Harassment — Tinubu Tells Nigerian Police

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Nigeria Police Force to carry out their duties with integrity, reminding officers that the authority they hold is meant to serve, not harass, the Nigerian people.

Speaking through Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the 2nd Annual IGP’s Award and Commendation Ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday night, the President stated that police power must not be misused.

“Your power is not for intimidation but for protection. Not for abuse, but for service,” Tinubu said, emphasizing that police officers must act with accountability, uphold the rule of law, and protect the rights of all citizens.

He said the government would continue to provide support for the Nigeria Police, including equipment, training, and welfare, to help officers perform their duties.

“This administration is committed to reforming and modernizing the police. We recognize that effective policing today requires technology, training, and strong ties with the community,” the President said.

Tinubu commented on the award recipients: “You’ve made the nation proud,” he said. “But don’t stop here—let your achievements inspire others and push you to do even more.”

He urged the police force to work toward gaining public trust. “The relationship between the police and the people must be built on trust,” he added.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also spoke at the event, citing ongoing security challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, and kidnapping. He said the police need to adapt and adopt global practices.

“We must become smarter, faster, and more focused on people,” the IGP said. “Without trust, we cannot be effective.”

Egbetokun acknowledged support from other security agencies, saying cooperation is necessary.

Speaking to the public, he said: “We are here to protect you. We are not perfect, but we are committed. Your safety is our mission.”

He said the awards were part of a process to recognize work within the police. He described the selection process as transparent and based on merit.

“The officers we celebrate today showed courage, ethics, leadership, and unwavering dedication,” the IGP said.
