World Press Freedom Day: UN Sec-Gen Urges Journalists to Report Fearlessly

On the occasion of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on journalists around the world to report without fear or favour. He emphasized that when journalists are unable to work freely, “we all lose.”

In his message, Guterres underscored that “in a world plagued by conflict and division, World Press Freedom Day highlights a fundamental truth: Freedom for people depends on freedom of the press.”

He recognized free and independent journalism as vital for ensuring accountability, justice, equality, and human rights, adding that it is the backbone of democratic societies.

However, Guterres lamented that the situation is worsening, with journalists facing increasing dangers. “Journalists face attacks, detentions, censorship, intimidation, violence and even death — simply for doing their jobs,” he said. “We are seeing a sharp rise in the number of journalists killed in conflict areas, particularly in Gaza.”

This year’s theme highlights the unprecedented threats to press freedom. Guterres also pointed out the dual impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on free expression.

He warned that while AI can enhance freedom of speech, it can also hinder it, citing the danger of biased algorithms, misinformation, and hate speech as significant challenges.

“Biased algorithms, outright lies and hate speech are landmines on the information superhighway,” he stated, emphasizing that “accurate, verifiable, fact-based information is the best tool to defuse them.”

He further explained that the Global Digital Compact, adopted last year, outlines steps to strengthen international cooperation and promote information integrity, tolerance, and respect in the digital space. AI, he noted, must be developed in a way that aligns with human rights and prioritizes facts.

“On this World Press Freedom Day, let’s commit to making this a reality and safeguard press freedom everywhere,” Guterres concluded, reinforcing his call for a more humane and responsible information ecosystem.
