Kano NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel Leaders Face Allegations of Financial Mismanagement, Unlawful Practices

Members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano, have raised concerns over alleged misconduct and financial irregularities within the Chapel.
In a petition signed by Abdulmumin Murtala, a correspondent for Leadership Newspaper, on behalf of the concerned 15 members, addressed to the Secretary of the Chapel, the members are calling for an explanation regarding several issues they believe contravene the constitution of the Union.
One of the major concerns highlighted by the petitioners involves an assignment carried out by the Chapel, where members traveled across various local government areas in Kano to report on the achievements of the state government in the education sector.
According to the petition, the Chapel allocated a sum of N5 million for the assignment, but there is no transparency or clear report on how the money was spent. The petition reads, “Members were told that N5 million was allocated to the assignment, but there is no clear report on how the money was spent.”
Another issue raised is the alleged mismanagement of funds belonging to the Chapel.
The petitioners claim that, instead of being deposited into the Chapel’s official account, funds are being deposited into the personal account of the Chairman. This, they say, has led to suspicions and a breakdown of trust within the Chapel.
The petition states, “Contrary to the laws of the Union, why are funds belonging to the Chapel being credited to the personal account of the Chairman instead of the Chapel’s account? Why has this become habitual, thereby creating suspicion and a lack of confidence?”
Additionally, the petition highlights the removal of two members from the Chapel over the past six months, which was reportedly done without any consultation. Furthermore, these members were denied their monthly allowances by the state government.
The petitioners are seeking an explanation as to where these withheld allowances have gone, noting the lack of communication and transparency on the matter.
“In the last six months, two members of the Chapel were unilaterally removed and denied their monthly allowances by the state government. However, no explanation has been offered to the members as to where their withheld allowances have gone,” the petition reads.
