JUST IN: Ex-CJN, Mohammed Uwais is dead

Justice Mohammed Uwais, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has passed away at the age of 89.

His death was confirmed in the early hours of Friday by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.

According to Ajulo, “Justice Uwais died in the early hours of Friday.”

Uwais served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 until his retirement in 2006, earning widespread respect for his judicial intellect and integrity.

Following his retirement from the Supreme Court, he was appointed to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, inaugurated by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The influential committee, tasked with recommending reforms to Nigeria’s electoral process, included respected figures such as Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), a renowned human rights lawyer.
