Governor Yusuf Approves N15bn Severance for APC Councillors, Defeats Ganduje Again

Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf has approved the sum of ₦15,667,634,645.10 for the settlement of outstanding severance allowance and gratuity owed to councillors who served under the previous administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The affected councillors, affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), served for eight years without receiving their entitlements. The current administration has decided to clear the debt.

According to official records, the current government has paid over ₦20 billion in outstanding benefits to retired and deceased workers, from a total of over ₦40 billion in liabilities inherited from the Ganduje administration.

The previous administration reportedly received bail-out funds from the Federal Government but did not settle the outstanding payments, which affected a significant number of local-level officials.

Leaders of the APC councillors have cited this neglect as one of the reasons for the party’s poor performance in the 2024 gubernatorial election.

The decision to release the outstanding allowances was made during the 27th Executive Council Meeting of the Kano State Government, presided over by Governor Yusuf on Tuesday at the new Government House in Kwankwasiyya City.

During the meeting, the Council approved a total of ₦51,575,700,575.96 for the execution of various projects and programs.
