FOSOGED Distributes Free Sanitary Pads to 72 Girls at Kano Special School

As part of the 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Foundation for Social Orientation and Gender Development (FOSOGED) distributed sanitary pads to 72 female students at the Kano Special Education School, Tudun Maliki, and held a session on menstrual health.
The event took place on May 28 and was led by FOSOGED Chairperson Mariya Inuwa Durumin Iya.
“We are here today not only to give out sanitary pads, but to send a message to these girls that menstruation is natural, and no one should feel ashamed or left behind because of it,” Durumin Iya said. “FOSOGED is deeply committed to ensuring that no girl misses out on education or suffers indignity due to lack of access to menstrual hygiene products.”
Sadiya Lawal Danyaro of the Federal University Dutsinma also spoke at the event. She encouraged young girls to maintain personal hygiene during menstruation.
“Hygiene is health. It is crucial for young ladies to understand how to properly care for themselves during menstruation. It’s not just about staying clean—it’s about protecting your body and building your confidence,” she said.
She noted the inclusion of girls with disabilities in the outreach, saying it highlights that menstrual hygiene is a right for all girls, regardless of ability or background.
The event included discussions, hygiene talks, and demonstrations on the use and disposal of sanitary pads.
World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually to raise awareness and challenge negative social norms around menstruation. This year’s theme focuses on making menstruation a normal part of life by 2030.
