Fake AK-47 Found in Home of Key Suspect in Rano DPO Murder

Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into the killing of CSP Baba Ali, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Division, with the Kano State Police Command confirming the discovery of a fake AK-47 rifle in the home of a key suspect.
The spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the item was found during a search of the suspect’s residence.
According to Kiyawa, the discovery raises concerns about the level of planning behind the mob attack that led to the DPO’s death.
“During the police investigation into the alleged killing of the DPO of Rano, a search of the suspect’s house led to the discovery of a fake AK-47 rifle in his possession,” Kiyawa stated.
The incident occurred after a mob attacked the Rano Police Division, resulting in the death of CSP Baba Ali.
The unrest followed the death of a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, who had been arrested for allegedly riding recklessly under the influence of substances.
The mechanic, detained on Saturday, May 25, 2025, reportedly showed signs of weakness and was taken to Rano General Hospital, where he died the next morning during treatment.
His death led to an attack on the police station, during which parts of the building and police vehicles were set on fire and vandalized.
In the aftermath, the DPO sustained injuries and was later confirmed dead at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
The police have arrested 41 suspects in connection with the violence, including the alleged principal suspect in the killing of the DPO.
“We are fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all lives and property in the state,” said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori. “The Police will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that all perpetrators are brought to justice.”
