AKTH Launches Nigeria’s First School of Laundry, Drycleaning Technology

The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano has made history by establishing Nigeria’s first-ever School of Laundry and Drycleaning Technology.
Previously known for pioneering maggot therapy in medical treatment, the School now trains students in the specialized handling and cleaning of hospital materials, including bed linens, blankets, and surgical gowns used by operating teams.
Graduates of the institution have been awarded National Diplomas (ND) in Laundry and Drycleaning Technology, with plans underway to introduce a Higher National Diploma (HND) programme.
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has accredited the School’s curriculum for a five-year period. Initially set up to train AKTH staff, the School has since expanded to admit students nationwide through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), with an annual intake of up to 60 candidates who meet the required science-related credits.
According to the School’s administration, many students are sponsored by federal teaching hospitals, medical centers, and state ministries of health, while others enroll independently to pursue a career in professional laundry and drycleaning services.
The School’s Principal, Mohammed Kabir Ahmad, revealed that a former governor from a northern state sponsored the training of 150 youths. After completing their studies, each graduate received two industrial washing machines to help them start their own businesses.
