Kano Court Jails Four Men for 40 Years Over Armed Robbery

A Kano High Court on Monday sentenced four men — Nafi’u Isah, Haruna Ya’u, Nadabo Mohammed, and Sa’adu Musa — to 40 years and six months’ imprisonment each for armed robbery and attempted murder.
The convicts, whose residential addresses were not provided, were found guilty on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, attempted murder, and causing grievous harm.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Usman Na’abba held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Na’abba therefore sentenced the convicts to six months’ imprisonment each for conspiracy, and 20 years’ imprisonment each for armed robbery.
He also sentenced them to 10 years’ imprisonment each for attempted murder and five years’ imprisonment each for causing grievous harm.
The judge ordered the convicts to pay the complainant the sum of N650,000, which they had collected from him, or serve an additional five years each in prison.
He added that the sentences would run concurrently.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the convicts committed the offence on May 1, 2022, at Kunkurawa Village in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.
He said that on that date, at about 1:00 a.m., the convicts criminally conspired, while armed with guns, sticks, and cutlasses, and broke into the house of one Haruna Shehu, located in Kunkurawa Village.
“The defendants beat the complainant and members of his family, causing grievous injury to his son, Ado Haruna Shehu.
“The convicts also robbed Shehu and his family of the sum of N650,000,” he said.
The prosecution presented six witnesses and tendered exhibits to prove its case against the convicts.
The convicts, however, denied committing the offence.
Abba-Sorondinki stated that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 97, 298(c), 230(a), and 349 of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State, 1991.
The defence counsel, Mr. Sani Idris, presented the convicts to testify in their own defence.
