Zaura Foundation Launches Anti-Drug Campaign in Kano

Efforts to address the rising cases of drug abuse in Kano have intensified as the Zaura Foundation launched a campaign aimed at rehabilitating hundreds of youth struggling with addiction in the state.

In addition, the Kano State Police Command, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have resolved to enhance collaboration to curb the abuse of illicit substances and associated criminal activities.

The renewed commitment by these security agencies followed the foundation’s promise to support their work through non-kinetic approaches to tackling drug abuse and related social issues.

Speaking to security stakeholders on Sunday, the convener and founder of the Zaura Foundation, Alhaji Abdulkarim Abdulsalam Zaura, expressed concern over the growing rate of drug abuse and political thuggery among young people in Kano.

Zaura, a former senatorial candidate for Kano Central under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections, warned that unless stakeholders — including government, traditional, and religious leaders — act collectively to support security agencies, the consequences of the ongoing security challenges could be severe.

He stated that the campaign was aimed at steering young people away from destructive lifestyles and restoring hope in their future, emphasizing that the initiative is not politically motivated.

Zaura said the foundation plans to remove youths from the streets, provide rehabilitation, and offer skills training and educational opportunities to help them become responsible members of society.

According to him, “Our intention is to bring life and message hope to the youths. Our desire is to see a peaceful and progressive society where the streets of Kano are free from thuggery, drug addicts, and where we can go to bed with our eyes closed.

“However, it is our collective responsibility to build a society free from youth restiveness. I want to support our security agencies to do more. We have organized dialogue with religious leaders and traditional rulers. They assured us of their support to fight drug abuse.”

Commissioner of Police, Kano Command, CP Ibrahim Bakori, outlined ongoing efforts by the command to rid the streets of illicit activities by youths who pose a security risk.

CP Bakori acknowledged the foundation’s support for the command’s work through non-kinetic initiatives, adding that rehabilitation and youth empowerment could help address the root causes of social problems.

Also speaking, Commander of the NDLEA in Kano State, Abubakar Idris, described the rising trend of drug abuse in Kano as alarming. He expressed hope that the foundation’s intervention would significantly contribute to reducing the prevalence of the problem.
