- Two co-wives in Dakwa community hospitalized after consuming kayan mata herbal mixture to boost husband’s sexual interest after third wife marriage.
- The herbal concoction, believed to enhance female appeal and stimulate male libido, is traditionally utilized in certain Nigerian communities.
- Two women, withheld names, consumed herbal substance three days after their husband, Musa Muhammad, married a third wife in Gusau, Zamfara State.
Two co-wives from the Dakwa community in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been hospitalized after consuming a locally prepared herbal mixture known as kayan mata. The women took the herbal substance in a desperate attempt to rekindle their husband’s sexual interest, following his recent marriage to a third wife.
Kayan mata is believed in some Nigerian communities to enhance female appeal and stimulate male libido. The two women, whose identities have not been disclosed, consumed the mixture just days after their husband, Musa Muhammad, married his third wife from Gusau, Zamfara State.
Muhammad confirmed the incident, revealing that the herbal mixture had severely impacted his wives’ health, prompting him to seek urgent medical attention. According to Muhammad, he received a call from his main residence alerting him that his two wives were in distress after he had spent the night with his new bride.
He recounted, “I was called from my main house that my two wives were not feeling well because I passed the night at a different house where my new bride is residing. I rushed back and found them writhing in pain, complaining of stomach issues.”
After initial treatment from a local nurse proved ineffective, Muhammad rushed the women to a private clinic in Madalla, Niger State. There, they were diagnosed with internal organ damage, allegedly caused by the herbal mixture. The women underwent surgery and were discharged after nearly a week of treatment.
The herbal mixture, which the women had regularly obtained from a female herbalist, is typically prepared as a liquid to be mixed with milk. However, they were reportedly given a powdered version, which may have contributed to the adverse reactions.
Authorities are now investigating the herbalist and efforts are underway to bring her in for questioning.
Maryam Muhammad, a nurse at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, expressed concerns about the dangers of kayan mata in an interview with Daily Post. She explained that these herbal aphrodisiacs can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to potential health risks, including an increased likelihood of developing various types of cancer.
Muhammad advised women to consider safer alternatives, recommending natural fruits and foods that provide similar benefits without the harmful side effects.
