Why Nollywood can’t compete with Hollywood — Germany-based filmmaker

A Nigerian-German film producer, Diminas Dagogo, has called on the Federal Government to invest in the country’s film industry to make a positive impact on the economy.
Dagogo said Nollywood could not compete with its American counterpart because the filmmaking equipment was produced by the latter.
He, however, said Nigeria’s film investors and stakeholders should strive to make a difference with creativity like their counterparts in India and Italy.
The Germany-based filmmaker made this known in an interview he granted in Lagos on Tuesday.
He noted that filmmaking needs innovation and funding at all levels, which calls for the government’s intervention.
Dagogo said, “Filmmaking is serious business. Every department—camera, sound, script, costume—needs to have a clear artistic vision.
“Government support is essential if we want to compete globally and preserve our identity.”
“We cannot compete with Hollywood. They created most of the tools we use, but we can be different, just like the Indians, Italians, or Koreans.”
According to him, lack of funding and distribution problems remain filmmaking’s challenges in Nigeria, calling on all stakeholders to resolve them.
“They all have unique styles. Nigeria needs to find its voice in film,” he added.
