“We’re Free from a Stubborn Member,” Says NNPP Chair on Senator Kawu’s Defection

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has welcomed the recent defection of Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a relief for the party.
Reacting to the development, the NNPP State Chairman, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, said the departure of Kawu had been anticipated and was not a blow to the party. He referred to Kawu as a “stubborn boy” whose actions had caused more disruption than progress within the party.
“We are not surprised because it is something we have been expecting. We had already suspended him because he had no value to add. That’s why he remains irrelevant,” Dungurawa said.
Dungurawa added that Kawu’s exit would restore peace within the party, allowing it to focus on its objectives without the distractions his presence had caused.
“The party will now have peace. He turned out to be a stubborn boy among the children of the party. So, having him out means the party can now focus on what it’s supposed to do, unlike when he was here disturbing the party,” he said.
When questioned about the possibility of other prominent figures, such as former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, following Kawu’s lead, Dungurawa firmly dismissed the idea.
“No, don’t bring someone else into this. I’m referring to Kawu alone. Nobody else has said they are leaving the party. The party has indeed suspended others like Rurum, but they have not defected. As of now, they remain in the party,” he explained.
Kawu, a former aide to President Muhammadu Buhari and a key figure in Kano’s political landscape, had announced his switch to the APC earlier this week, citing a desire to align with a platform he believes offers better prospects for governance and service.
His defection adds a new twist to the ongoing political reshuffling in Kano as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.
