Use Social Media to Unite, Not Divide—Minister Tells Youth

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has advised Nigerian youths to use social media responsibly, warning that its misuse could lead to division.
Speaking at the TEDxNTICAbujaYouth event in Abuja, Idris encouraged young people and journalists to embrace media and information literacy to identify misinformation and falsehoods.
“Social media is here to stay,” Idris said. “But how we use it matters. It can either bring us together or tear us apart. We want our youths to use it as a tool to unite, to inspire, and to build bridges across our differences.”
He also spoke on the need for journalists to uphold ethical reporting. “Media literacy is crucial,” he added. “It helps you tell the difference between what’s true and what’s not.”
The event featured talks by students and professionals on technology, education, and entertainment.
“Wherever you are in life, even if you feel like a failure, you can always rise with determination,” said student speaker Nafisa Aliyu, whose talk was titled The Golden Child.
Another student, Muhammed Kerim Korkmaz, shared his personal experience. “I chose my topic, Embracing Our Differences, because I’m Turkish and living in Nigeria. I want people to understand that being different should never be a reason for hate,” he explained.
