Two Arrested in Kano with Fake Foreign Currency

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Zonal Directorate, is investigating two suspects found with $899,800 in counterfeit United States currency.

The suspects, Abubakar Hussaini, 42, and Sahabi Adamu, 53, were arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) along Maiduguri Road in Wudil, Kano State.

They were traveling in a commercial Golf 3 Station Wagon, reportedly heading to Kila Village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State when they were stopped.

NDLEA officials found the counterfeit dollar notes hidden in a carton of Maggi Star seasoning cubes. The suspects and the fake currency were handed over to the EFCC for investigation.

A spokesperson for the EFCC said, “Preliminary findings revealed that the suspects were on their way to Kila Village to meet one Muhammad Walo, who was to introduce them to one Mallam Mashiru, a self-styled spiritualist. Mashiru allegedly claimed he could transform counterfeit dollars into genuine currency through ritual prayers.”

The EFCC said investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be arraigned in court after the process is completed.

“We are committed to ensuring that fraudsters, no matter how crafty, are brought to justice. Counterfeit currency is not just a financial crime; it’s a direct threat to our economic stability,” the EFCC spokesperson added.

The case has attracted attention due to the involvement of a spiritualist and the use of fake currency. Reports of individuals seeking wealth through spiritual means have been increasing.

As of press time, EFCC operatives are said to be tracking the whereabouts of the alleged spiritualist, Mallam Mashiru.
