Tinubu Confers National Honours on Soyinka, Falana, Bagauda Kaltho, Kudirat Abiola, 61 Others

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given national awards to 65 Nigerians, both living and deceased, citing their involvement in the pro-democracy movement and public service.

Among the recipients are Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and journalist Bagauda Kaltho, who went missing during the military regime.

Kudirat Abiola, the late wife of Chief MKO Abiola, was also honoured posthumously. She was assassinated in 1996 during efforts to restore the annulled June 12, 1993, election. She was awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).

Others who received posthumous awards include former Chief of Staff Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (GCFR), political activist Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti (CON), former governor Alhaji Balarabe Musa (CFR), and journalist Bagauda Kaltho (OON).

The list includes Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, journalist and publisher Dapo Olorunyomi (OON), media figure Sam Amuka Pemu (CON), lawyer Ayo Obe (OON), and investigative journalist Kunle Ajibade (OON).

Senator Shehu Sani, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, and other individuals from civil society and academia were also named.

The honours, ranging from Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) to Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), were given to people in media, civil society, politics, academia, and activism.

Tinubu also decorated National Assembly leaders who had been named for awards in 2023. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas received the GCON. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu received the CFR.
