Tinubu Appoints Kayode Opeifa as Nigeria Railway Corporation MD

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Kayode Opeifa as the substantive Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).

Opeifa brings a wealth of experience in transportation management and urban mobility to his new role.

Opeifa first rose to prominence as the Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State under the administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola.

During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives that modernized Lagos’ transport sector, enhancing traffic management and establishing the city as a benchmark for urban transportation in Africa.

Recognized for his innovative approaches, Opeifa was later appointed as Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In 2019, Opeifa was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT) charged with resolving the notorious Apapa gridlock in Lagos.

Working under the leadership of then-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Opeifa’s efforts contributed significantly to addressing the perennial traffic congestion that had plagued Lagos ports and surrounding areas.

Opeifa’s appointment follows the exit of Fidet Okhiria, who completed his second four-year tenure as Managing Director on October 18, 2024.

Ben Iloanusi, who served in an acting capacity after Okhiria’s departure, will now hand over the reins to Opeifa.

As Managing Director of NRC, Opeifa is expected to leverage his expertise to drive modernization and efficiency within Nigeria’s railway system.

His tenure will likely focus on expanding railway infrastructure, improving service delivery, and promoting sustainable transportation solutions across the country.

Opeifa’s career reflects a commitment to transforming Nigeria’s transportation landscape.

His leadership at the NRC is anticipated to align with President Tinubu’s broader vision for infrastructural development and economic growth.
