“They hate me cause of my father’s wealth“ – Davido reveals

  • Davido has disclosed that he has faced significant criticism in Nigeria due to his affluent upbringing.
  • In a recent podcast appearance, he acknowledged that his affluent background could have potentially impacted his career success if publicly known.

Nigerian music star Davido has opened up about the intense criticism he faced in Nigeria due to his privileged upbringing. Speaking in a recent podcast interview, the singer revealed that his wealthy background could have become a major obstacle early in his music career if it had been widely known at the time.

Davido explained that by the time the public became aware of his affluence, he had already released several hit songs and gained a solid fan base. This early momentum, he said, helped shield him from the backlash that might have derailed his ambitions.

Despite the criticism, Davido maintained that nothing could have stopped him from pursuing music. He emphasized his deep passion for the craft and said he would have pushed forward even if it meant enduring tough conditions.

The award-winning artist also reflected on the challenges of fame, likening his experience to a power shift. According to him, people often support you while you’re on the rise but turn against you once you reach the top.

Nevertheless, Davido has continued to thrive in the music industry, producing hit after hit and maintaining a loyal fan base despite ongoing scrutiny.

Davido said: “I’m the biggest criticised artist in Nigeria. I mean, I’m on fire and I’ve been on fire for a while. In the beginning, they didn’t know that my dad was rich. So the stigma of a rich kid doing music didn’t end up as crazy as it should have been for me.

“People didn’t know my father was rich. It was too late, I already did three hit songs before they found out that my dad had money…

“But I just wanted to do music. I didn’t care if I had to become homeless. At that point, that was all I wanted to do. Nothing would stop me.

“Over time, people started hating me because my dad is rich. But I keep on dropping good music, and it keeps working out.

“It happens to everyone, once you become the biggest in anything, you will get criticised. You are doing an election, people love you and they vote for you. But when you become president, they hate you.”
