Teachers Who Harass Students Will Face the Law – Kano Govt

The Kano State Government has warned teachers and school staff against sexually harassing students, stating that anyone found guilty will face legal consequences.

The warning was issued by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Student Matters, Ibrahim Sumaila, during a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Centre for Awareness on Justice and Accountability (CAJA). The meeting addressed the rise in sexual harassment in schools.

“As an Islamic state, Kano will not stand by while our daughters are abused. Any teacher who dares to harass a student will be exposed, dismissed, and prosecuted accordingly,” Sumaila stated.

The meeting brought together students, media professionals, and civil society representatives. It also launched a six-month CAJA project aimed at reducing sexual harassment in schools by promoting the adoption of clear policies.

CAJA’s Executive Director, Kabiru Dakata, said the project focuses on both tertiary and secondary institutions, many of which have no policies or only vague guidelines.

“We spent years pushing for a national law, but it’s a slow process. Now, we’re working directly with schools to develop clear, stand-alone policies,” Dakata said.

He added that some students drop out after rejecting sexual advances from lecturers. “Most students don’t even know who to report to or what steps to take. That’s a major system failure,” he said.

At the event, Barrister Maryam Ahmad Abubakar defined sexual harassment as unwelcome behavior—verbal, physical, or psychological—that creates a hostile academic environment.

She stressed the need for awareness and education for staff and students and urged institutions to include moral and religious teachings in their courses.

Participants suggested stricter penalties for offenders, reviewing age limits for school admissions and employment, and encouraging survivors to advocate for safer school environments.

CAJA plans to carry out advocacy in selected schools, distribute educational materials, and train survivors to speak out.
