Tanker Explosion in Ibadan Claims Driver’s Life, Injures One
A tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) exploded in the early hours of Wednesday in Ibadan, killing the driver and injuring his motor boy.
The tragic incident occurred near Fijabi House, along the Agbowo-Ojoo/Iwo Road Expressway. Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the incident in a statement to newsmen.
According to Akinyinka, the tanker lost control, collided with two other trucks, and somersaulted into a nearby pit before bursting into flames.
“The agency received a distress call about the fire at 2:45 a.m. and swiftly dispatched personnel to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas,” Akinyinka said.
The tanker driver was burned to death, while the motor boy sustained injuries and was rescued. He was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment.
While the tanker was completely destroyed in the blaze, the other two trucks were saved by firefighters.
The Oyo State Fire Services, led by the Director of Operations, Mr. Ismail Adeleke, worked alongside police and other security agencies to contain the situation and ensure order at the scene.
Akinyinka commended the swift response of the fire service team, which prevented further loss of lives and property.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report emergencies promptly to prevent similar incidents in the future.
