Suspend Foreign Scholarships, Fund Kano Varsities — APC’s Dankano Tells Gov Yusuf

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Auwal Dankano, has criticized the recent hike in registration fees at Northwest University, calling on the state government to reverse the decision.

The university management recently increased the annual registration fees from ₦19,000 to nearly ₦53,000, drawing concerns from students, parents, and education stakeholders.

Reacting to the development, Dankano said the institution may be facing financial challenges but argued that the increase contradicts the state’s education policy.

“Yes, we are all aware that the management unofficially complained on the shortage of fund to run the varsity, hence they decided to make the increase,” he said. “To say the fact, the school authority has a valid reason to increase the fees. But this is not in line with the Kano State policy on education.”

Dankano said the government should find alternative ways to fund the universities instead of transferring the burden to students and their families.

“In my view, the government should reverse the increase and create an avenue where the deficit should be funded elsewhere,” he suggested.

He also called for the suspension of overseas scholarship programs, recommending that the funds be redirected to Northwest University and Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education.

“Yes, the government should suspend overseas scholarship and channel the money to the two universities in the state,” Dankano said.

According to him, with an estimated 10,000 Kano indigenes in each of the two institutions, the state would need about ₦1.5 billion annually to cover the funding gap.

“Based on assumptions, the average 10,000 Kano indigens in each of the two state-owned universities, the state government needs to pay about ₦1.5 billion annually. That will fill in the gap, and make education for all,” he emphasized.
