Sowore: Buhari Killed Nigeria, Tinubu Is Burying It – 2027 Election Already Rigged

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has lashed out at President Bola Tinubu, saying his administration is taking Nigeria from bad to worse and declaring that democracy in the country is all but dead.

In a scathing interview with Vanguard, Sowore didn’t hold back, accusing Tinubu of wrecking the economy, eroding institutions, and crushing political freedoms—just two years into his tenure.

“Nigerians made a grave mistake by voting Bola Tinubu into office,” Sowore said. “Buhari killed Nigeria in eight years; Tinubu came, and in two years, he is burying it.”

As the country prepares to mark Democracy Day, Sowore dismissed the occasion entirely. “Nothing to celebrate,” he said. “People no longer believe in democracy. The promises of free speech, credible elections, and the freedom to choose have been destroyed.”

He also raised alarm over a new push in the House of Representatives to make voting compulsory, describing it as a move toward dictatorship. “If you have to use threats to force people to vote, then democracy is dead. Democracy is about choice,” he warned, calling the proposal “forced legitimacy.”

Known for his outspoken style, Sowore embraced the criticism that he’s too radical. “Every meaningful change in this world came through so-called radicals. I will not water down my convictions to please those who want me to fit into a box,” he declared.

When asked about the state of opposition politics, Sowore didn’t mince words. “What you call opposition isn’t opposition,” he said. “Real opposition means a clear ideological difference. What we have are political mercenaries looking for the best-paying camp.”

As for his own political ambition, Sowore remained vague, saying his fight has never stopped—whether in campaigns, protests, or legal battles. “I’ve never stopped running—campaigns, protests, court battles. But I don’t believe in the current ballot system. The 2027 results are already written,” he said.

Sowore also ruled out forming alliances with mainstream politicians or parties. “The alliance I care about is with the oppressed—the 50 million registered voters who don’t vote. They’re my alliance,” he said.

On the economy, Sowore took aim at Tinubu’s major policy decisions like fuel subsidy removal and naira floating. “Removing fuel subsidy, floating the naira—none of it benefits ordinary people. If they say this is the ‘hard road to prosperity,’ I say it’s a road to destruction,” he said.

He also spoke about his campaign calling for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police. “We want the IGP to resign—he’s overstayed. We haven’t given up,” he insisted.
