Senator Sani Musa: No Fallout with Kawu Sumaila, Budget Critique Misunderstood

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), has denied an online report suggesting he reacted negatively to the 2023 Appropriations Bill in a way that implied a rift with Senator Kawu Sumaila.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Senator Musa said the story was “completely false and taken out of context,” clarifying that the reaction being attributed to him was directed at a 2023 article—not at Sumaila.

“The story currently being circulated about my reaction to the 2023 Appropriations Bill is completely false and taken out of context,” he stated.

He said his reaction was to an anonymous article that accused the Senate of mishandling the 2023 budget process. According to him, Senator Kawu Sumaila had only forwarded the article.

“In 2023, I responded to a poorly written article by an unknown author that falsely accused the Senate of mishandling the budget. It was not written by my friend and brother, Sen. Kawu Sumaila,” Musa said.

He added, “He merely forwarded it in good faith, thinking it was credible. I reacted accordingly—nothing more.”

Senator Musa said the issue was being brought up again by people trying to cause conflict after Senator Kawu Sumaila joined the APC.

“Now, mischief-makers are resurfacing it to stir division, especially after my friend and brother Sen. Kawu Sumaila joined the APC,” he said.

He stated that there had never been a disagreement between him and Sumaila. “For the record, myself and Senator Kawu Sumaila have never had an altercation, it’s all FALSE,” he said.

“Please ignore the propaganda. It’s politically driven and baseless. Let’s stay focused on nation-building,” he concluded.
