Dr. Enyi Onyebuchi Paul, a Nigerian scholar, has gained widespread attention after it was revealed that he works as a cleaner at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) in Abakaliki, despite holding three academic degrees, including a PhD in Mathematics Education.

Hailing from Ikelegu Ishieke in the Ndiabor community of Ebonyi Local Government Area, Dr. Enyi began his journey at EBSU in 2007, taking up a role as a cleaner and messenger. However, his passion for education drove him to pursue higher learning while maintaining his job. Over the years, he successfully earned a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree, and ultimately, a PhD—all from the same institution where he continues to serve in a low-ranking position.

His story came to light through Odo Godfrey Chikwere, a journalist with Legacy 95.1 FM in Abakaliki, who shared his plight on social media. Odo expressed deep concern over the disparity between Dr. Enyi’s academic achievements and his current job, highlighting that despite obtaining the highest level of education, he still earns less than ₦70,000 per month.

“This is Dr. Enyi Onyebuchi Paul. He was employed at EBSU in 2007 as a cleaner/messenger but struggled to put himself through school, earning a PhD in 2022. Yet, he remains in the same menial role, earning a meager salary,” Odo wrote.

The journalist called on influential individuals from the Izzi community to intervene and help Dr. Enyi secure a position more suited to his qualifications. He criticized community leaders who failed to support him despite his efforts and outstanding academic background.

As the story continues to circulate online, it has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the university’s failure to offer Dr. Enyi a position that aligns with his expertise.

Efforts to reach Dr. Enyi and Odo for further comments are still ongoing.
