Protesters Set Police Station Ablaze in Kano Community Over Alleged Police Brutality

Tension erupted in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, in police custody during interrogation.

Abdullahi, who had been accused of a traffic offence, was arrested on Sunday. His death in custody sparked outrage among residents, particularly the youth.

What began as a peaceful protest quickly turned violent when demonstrators set the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze in response to Abdullahi’s death.

Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated when police allegedly opened fire on the protesters, injuring two young men.

“We were protesting peacefully. We only wanted answers about what happened to Abdullahi Musa. But they started shooting at us,” said one of the protesters, who spoke to CITAD Radio on condition of anonymity.

The injured youths, identified as Hassan Salisu Hassan and Muhammad Ibrahim, are currently receiving treatment at Rano General Hospital, according to residents.

A resident of Rano, Malam Yusuf Auwalu, told CITAD Radio: “It’s a sad day for our community. Abdullahi Musa was not a criminal. He was arrested, and now he is dead. We want justice.”

Kano Police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident. He stated, “An incident occurred in Rano — a thorough investigation will be conducted, by the Grace of God.”

Details shortly.
