Pope Francis Laid To Rest At Santa Maria Maggiore Following Emotional Vatican Farewell

The coffin of Pope Francis was brought to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome on Saturday, following a solemn funeral ceremony at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

As reported by AFP, the white popemobile carried the late pontiff’s coffin through Rome, where tens of thousands of mourners gathered along the route to bid him a final farewell.

The 88-year-old Argentine-born Pope, who passed away on Monday, was widely admired for his deep commitment to the poor and for being the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church.

Earlier in the day, an enormous crowd filled St. Peter’s Square to attend the funeral, with numerous world leaders present, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The two leaders reportedly exchanged brief words inside the basilica before the ceremony commenced.

Throughout his 12-year papacy, Pope Francis was celebrated for his efforts to create a more inclusive Church and for addressing pressing global challenges.

Vatican Media later shared moving images of the burial procession, capturing heartfelt moments from the Pope’s final journey.
