A police officer who mistakenly shot and killed a 14-year-old WASSCE candidate in Ibadan has reportedly been taken into custody.
The unfortunate incident happened on Tuesday along the Gbagi-Alakia road while the student, Kehinde Alade, was on his way to sit for his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.
According to Police Public Relations Officer CSP Adewale Osifeso, the officer involved is a corporal, though his name has not been released.
Commissioner of Police Johnson Adenola has directed a thorough investigation into the matter, assigning the case to the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The police disclosed that Kehinde’s father, Odunayo Alade, who was driving the vehicle, was allegedly involved in reckless driving.
Reports state he was driving against the flow of traffic and attempting to evade arrest during a joint traffic control operation between the police and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).
“Alade, who is both the parent and driver of a black Honda car with registration number FST 639 JJ, collided with the patrol vehicles belonging to OYRTMA and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck while trying to avoid arrest for reckless driving,” the police said.
“In an effort to stop further damage, a police corporal fired a shot at the car’s tyres. Sadly, the bullet missed and struck Kehinde Alade, who was sitting in the back seat behind the driver.”
He was immediately taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival, the statement added.
His remains have since been deposited at the mortuary of Adeoyo State Hospital for autopsy and preservation.
To prevent any possible disturbance, Commissioner Adenola deployed tactical and intelligence teams, including the Police Mobile Force (PMF), to the scene and other key areas in Ibadan. This quick action helped restore calm and ensured public safety.
The Oyo State Police Command extended heartfelt condolences to the Alade family and reaffirmed its commitment to justice and accountability. Further details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
