Payroll Audit Exposes Massive Fraud in Kano Local Councils

A recent payroll audit has exposed fraud in the local government councils of Kano State, with 247 names of deceased or retired staff still receiving salaries.

The findings show that the names remained on the payroll after the individuals had left service or died, resulting in fraudulent salary payments totaling ₦27,824,395.40 for March 2025 alone.

The information was disclosed in a statement by the Press Secretary to the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Muhammad, and made available to newsmen on Saturday.

According to the statement, the discovery came from a validation exercise aimed at cleaning up the state’s payroll system.

“In a decisive move towards reforming the salary administration process within the civil service, the Kano State Government uncovered irregularities involving ghost workers at the local government level,” the statement said.

It explained that the government recovered the fraudulent payments and returned the money to the Local Government Treasury while investigations continue to determine the extent of the scam and identify those responsible.

“We remain resolute in our mission to sanitize the payroll system and ensure responsible management of public resources,” the statement added.
