Northern Women Lawyers’ Chair to Gandu: Don’t Use NBA for Kano Emirate Tussle

The Chairperson of the Northern Women Lawyers Congress, Barrister Nafisa Abba, has warned legal practitioner Badamasi Sulaiman Gandu against dragging the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) into the ongoing emirate tussle in Kano State, a case currently before the court.
Barrister Nafisa’s comments follow Badamasi Gandu’s reaction to her earlier advice to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, urging him to cooperate with the police investigation into the Sallah durbar incident that reportedly resulted in the loss of lives.
Responding to Gandu’s criticism, Barrister Nafisa said his comments were “unprofessional and unbecoming of a member of the Kano Bar.”
“I was amazed by the response of my colleague Badamasi Sulaiman Gandu. It’s so sad that a lawyer like him would go so low like this; lawyers are known for always being comprehensive to any matter before making their opinion,” she said.
Clarifying the position of her organization, Nafisa emphasized that her statement was issued in her capacity as Chairperson of the Northern Women Lawyers Congress, and not on behalf of the Nigerian Bar Association.
“As the Chairperson of Northern Women Lawyers Congress, we have the right to issue a statement, it’s our constitutional responsibility. We didn’t do that on behalf of the Nigerian Bar Association. It’s ridiculous that Badamasi is bringing NBA into the matter,” she said.
She also accused Gandu of taking sides in the matter while pretending to be neutral.
“Badamasi Gandu has taken side on the matter. Everyone knows that he is a Kwankwasiyya supporter but just hiding under human rights activism. It’s good that you have shown the world your true colour.”
Barrister Nafisa further called on the Emir and his supporters to refrain from using “faceless organizations” to sway public opinion in the sensitive dispute.
“All we are saying is for the Emir and his supporters to stop using faceless organisations on this matter. Like I did, I wrote my name, and the organisation I’m representing is not a pseudonym,” she added.
Reiterating her position, the senior lawyer maintained that no one, including the Emir, is above the law and urged him to tender his statement to the police for the sake of peace and justice.
