No, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Hasn’t Been Sacked – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked social media reports claiming that its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has been sacked by President Bola Tinubu.
A viral WhatsApp message alleged that Yakubu was removed and replaced by one Prof. Olamilekan.
“INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has been replaced with Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan by President Tinubu,” the message read. The message had no source or attribution.
Responding to an inquiry, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, said simply: “Please, disregard. It is not true.”
Yakubu, who is currently serving his second term in office, is expected to step down towards the end of the year.
The process of appointing an INEC Chairman involves the President nominating a candidate and forwarding the nominee’s credentials to the Department of State Services (DSS) for profiling.
After the screening, the President then presents the nominee to the National Council of State for advisory review. Based on the outcome, the President forwards the name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
