No One Can Defeat Tinubu in 2027 – Yakasai

Elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has declared that, going by the current political landscape, no one stands a real chance of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, the 98-year-old statesman said President Tinubu remains the most formidable figure on the political scene, largely due to his wide support network and the disarray within opposition parties.

“As things stand today, I don’t see anyone with the capacity, nationwide reach, or structure strong enough to challenge Tinubu successfully,” Yakasai said.

He explained that President Tinubu enjoys the clear advantage of incumbency, the loyalty of his ministers and governors, and even some support from members of the opposition.

“Tinubu has a strong grip on the political machinery—his ministers, most governors, and even some opposition leaders are backing him. That kind of advantage can’t be underestimated,” he added.

Yakasai also dismissed claims that northern political groups have endorsed a candidate for 2027, stating that such claims are mostly personal opinions and not official positions.

“I’ve not seen or heard of any formal decision by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) or the Northern Elders Forum supporting any particular candidate,” he said. “The north as a bloc has not taken a stand.”

He observed that divisions and internal wrangling within the major opposition parties have only served to boost Tinubu’s chances further.

Asked about the performance of the Tinubu administration over the past two years, Yakasai declined to pass judgment but emphasized that the focus of politicians should shift from personal ambition to genuine service.

“Our politicians must start prioritizing the nation above everything else,” he said. “We’ve allowed ethnic and religious politics to divide us for too long—it’s time to focus on ideas and programmes that move Nigeria forward.”

Looking back on his own journey, Yakasai, who turns 100 this December, attributed his long life to God’s grace and good genes, noting that both of his parents lived to a ripe old age.

“I’m blessed with over 80 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It’s all by the grace of God,” he said with a smile.
