No 2027 Bid Yet – Presidency Warns Over Tinubu-Shettima Billboards

The Presidency has disapproved of billboards in some major Nigerian cities promoting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency said it was “dismayed” by the increasing number of such billboards, especially in Abuja and Kano, some of which also feature images of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

“While President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support,” Onanuga stated, “the two leaders do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land.”

He noted that Nigeria’s electoral law forbids premature campaigns and said neither the President nor the Vice President has endorsed or authorized any group or individual to promote a 2027 bid through any media.

“The electoral law that guides the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbids any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections,” the statement read. “Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages.”

The Presidency asked those behind the campaign materials to stop, warning that such actions could violate legal and democratic norms.

“Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him,” Onanuga said.

The statement said Tinubu and Shettima remain focused on “economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security.”

“When INEC signals that the processes for the 2027 elections can start, President Tinubu will duly inform Nigerians of his plans,” the statement added.
