NHRC Decries Injustice, Impunity Across Nigeria

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has raised the alarm over rising cases of injustice and unchecked impunity across Nigeria, revealing that human rights violations surged to 261,483 complaints in April 2025 alone.
disclosed this on Friday, stressing that killings and kidnappings were the most widespread forms of abuse reported during the month.
“In April 2025, there were 261,483 complaints. Why this number is significant: it represents only the visible portion of a much deeper situation,” Ojukwu said.
He expressed deep concern over the repeated violent attacks, particularly in Plateau and Benue states, noting that these regions have become epicenters of unrelenting bloodshed and displacement.
“The killings in Plateau and Benue states, as well as the resurgence of Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks in Borno, have left hundreds of citizens injured and dead,” he said. “The crisis in the Middle Belt is not new but has continued for decades without a solution.”
According to the NHRC, the Middle Belt region—especially Benue, Plateau, and Borno states—accounted for 60 percent of the killings recorded in the country in April.
The commission said that complaints from the region made up 35 percent of the national total and noted a 20 percent increase in cases compared to the previous month.
In response to the alarming figures, Ojukwu called for decisive action from all levels of government. He urged federal and state authorities to urgently investigate and bring to justice all those responsible for the atrocities.
“We call for independent, impartial, prompt investigation of all the cases stated. Support services for all victims. Accountability for all perpetrators, sustained investment in all peacebuilding,” he stated.
The NHRC emphasized that the right to life is non-negotiable and should be upheld without compromise. Within the period under review, the commission said it successfully concluded 863 complaints and petitions related to human rights violations.
