N’Delta group protests in London, seeks investigation into oil facility guard’s death

Niger Delta environmental activists based in the United Kingdom have called on the Federal Government to ensure justice for a coordinator with Tantita Security Services Limited, Ikerete Udo,
who was reportedly killed while on duty protecting oil facilities in the region.

The activists, under the umbrella of the Niger Delta Environmental Justice Coalition, staged a peaceful protest on Monday outside the Nigerian High Commission in London to express their concerns over Udo’s death and the rising insecurity faced by those combating oil theft.

Speaking during the submission of a petition to the High Commission, the group’s spokesperson, Mrs Busayo Charles, described Udo’s killing as a tragic loss and called on the Nigerian government to launch a full investigation into the incident.

“Udo died in active service while securing vital oil infrastructure. We are here to urge the Nigerian government to ensure that justice is done and that his family is adequately compensated,” she said.

The group also appealed to the Federal Government to strengthen support for security operatives and contractors safeguarding the nation’s oil assets, adding that justice and deterrence were necessary to protect those putting their lives on the line.

“We are counting on the Nigerian authorities to act swiftly and transparently. It’s important that this does not happen again,” Charles added.

The coalition commended Tantita Security Services for reportedly supporting Udo’s family while urging the FG to provide additional assistance as a sign of commitment to the welfare of those fighting oil-related crimes.

The petition also expressed concerns over the tone of public discourse surrounding the activities of security personnel and some stakeholders in the region. It urged for responsible communication and restraint in addressing sensitive matters related to the Niger Delta.

The Nigerian High Commission acknowledged receipt of the petition and assured the group that their demands would be communicated to the appropriate authorities in Nigeria.
