NCS Deploys AI Scanners to Combat Smuggling, Says CG Adeniyi

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has rolled out artificial intelligence-powered scanners and forensic tools at strategic border points to enhance the fight against smuggling and illicit trade, according to Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Speaking at the 4th World Customs Organisation (WCO) Donors Conference for the West and Central Africa Region in Abuja, Adeniyi shared that over 5,000 customs officers had recently completed training to strengthen enforcement efforts and modernise customs operations nationwide.
The conference, themed “Partners Mobilisation Around Priority Projects in the WCO-WCA Region: A Genuine Pledge to Meet the Modernisation Goals and Performance Targets of Member Customs Administrations,” brought together key stakeholders to foster support and investment for customs modernisation and regional integration.
Adeniyi highlighted that the adoption of advanced technology is a crucial part of NCS’s broader modernisation strategy. This initiative aims to align the agency with global best practices, facilitate trade, and support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.
“We have already begun implementing key initiatives, such as AI-powered scanners and forensic tools, to help detect illicit trade. Additionally, over 5,000 officers have received intensive technical training tailored to regional needs,” he said.
He also emphasized that the Nigeria Customs Service would serve as a regional hub for capacity building, with its WCO-recognised training centre in Abuja hosting programmes for officers from across West and Central Africa.
