Mohbad’s dad releases new songs amid backlash

The latest single of Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer Ilerioluwa (Promise), popularly known as Mohbad, has stirred mixed reactions among netizens and music lovers.

During the week, a viral clip featuring Joseph recording the new song introduced him as “Mohbad’s dad,” which prompted backlash from fans who perceive him as attempting to capitalise on his son’s legacy.

While Joseph asserted that he had been a music artiste for years, his work gained traction only after Mohbad’s untimely passing. In a previous interview, Aloba emphasised that he was not exploiting his son’s death for personal gain, but rather using music as a means to cope with his grief.

“I taught Mohbad how to sing. I am a gospel singer, and he was a hip-hop artiste. I sing whenever I remember him, but people don’t see it that way. I did a record before his death, but it was not popular, but now people are focusing on me, and they know the kind of thing I’m doing,” he had explained.

Despite sharing some artistic traits, the musical styles of father and son diverge significantly. Mohbad was known for his pop sound, while Joseph leans towards traditional gospel music, often incorporating call-and-response elements and lively instrumentation like drums and trumpets in his performances.

Meanwhile, it appears Joseph plans to embrace the name, ‘Mohbad Dad’, as his stage name. Saturday Beats gathered that his music is currently promoted on Instagram and YouTube under that name. His latest single, “Plea,” had already amassed over 1,500 views within 48 hours of its release.

Interestingly, before his passing, Mohbad had mentioned collaborating with his father on a song that remains unreleased.

“My dad makes music. I have him on a song already, but I don’t know when I am going to drop it,” he had shared.
