Meet the New President of Nigeria’s Shari’ah Council

Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar is an Islamic scholar with specialization in Shari’ah and Hadith. He holds a Ph.D. from the Islamic University of Madinah. He has served as a Permanent Commissioner in the Kano State Shari’ah Commission and as chairman of the Shari’ah Advisory Committee of Stanbic IBTC Bank. He is also the president of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN).
He obtained his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Hadith and Islamic Studies from the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
He worked with the Kano State Shari’ah Commission, advising on Shari’ah matters and overseeing its implementation.
He has contributed to the development of Islamic financial services, including serving as chairman of the Shari’ah Advisory Committee of Stanbic IBTC Bank.
He represents the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the Technical Committee of the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) and chairs the IFSB Working Group on Risk Management for Takaful.
He authored a Ph.D. thesis titled *”Methodology of Imam Ahmad Regarding the Inconspicuous Weaknesses of Hadith Narrations”* and has presented papers at various conferences.
He was awarded Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by the Nigerian government and has been acknowledged for his involvement in Islamic finance.
Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar has combined academic and practical experience in Islamic studies, finance, and governance.
