Man Loses Wife During Surgery as NEPA takes light mid-operation

A heartbreaking incident has occurred at Jummai Babangida Aliyu General Hospital, where a man lost his wife during surgery following a prolonged power outage and fuel shortage that disrupted the operation.

The devastated husband confirmed the tragedy through a series of emotional posts on his Facebook page. In one of his posts, he wrote:

“Inna lillahi wa Inna lillahi rajiun. Kasaa. I just lost my wife.”

Providing more details, he narrated how 35 minutes into his wife’s surgery, electricity was cut and the theater’s generator had no fuel to provide backup. Although fuel was eventually sourced, the generator failed to start, forcing hospital staff to call a mechanic.

He continued:

“One of the nurses told me not to worry, assuring me the operation was ongoing with alternative lighting — using a lamp or flashlight. Meanwhile, the mechanic had to travel to Ogbomosho in Minna to purchase spare parts.”

An hour later, public electricity was restored, but by then, the surgery — which was initially expected to take 90 minutes — had been severely delayed, dragging from 4 p.m. until after 7 p.m..

As the heartbreaking story circulated online, many Nigerians flooded the comment section of his post, offering condolences and expressing outrage over the hospital’s negligence.

The tragic event has once again drawn attention to the critical infrastructure failures plaguing many health institutions across the country.

See some reactions below:

@realYusufTukur: “Some happenings in Nigeria can only be imagined in fiction books & movies than in reality. 😭 May Allah forgive her shortcomings, have mercy upon her soul & give him the fortitude to bear the loss. No amount of action, if any, can even reduce his pain.”

@Yusuf_A_J: “The worst stroke of pain will hit you when you get to know the ‘team’ that carried out the surgery. Definitely not even a junior reg.”

@_shebejnr: “Omoohh dead body go surplus for that hospital oooo, blood go flow. Tabdi… Make Nigeria no happen to any of us oooo.”

@atkfarouk: “This is horrible, may Nigeria never happen to us.”

@Iamsheriff5: “May Nigeria not happen to us. Let’s pray we don’t face similar challenges. The thought of a hospital struggling with power during a life-saving operation is devastating. May the deceased rest in peace.”

@mister_YB: “What sort of negligence is this for Gods sake, how can a hospital depend on NEPA for a life saving situation ??”
