Lamido to Tinubu: Settle MKO’s ₦45bn, End June 12 Saga

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pay the ₦45 billion allegedly owed to the late Chief MKO Abiola by the Nigerian government — a move he says will finally bring closure to the lingering June 12 political saga.

Lamido made the call in Abuja on Tuesday during the public presentation of his new book, *Being True To Myself*. Speaking at the event, he said settling the debt owed to Abiola, who won the annulled 1993 presidential election, is key to ending what he described as the “double injustice” suffered by the late business mogul and politician.

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to President Tinubu to close the chapter of June 12,” Lamido said. “In his book, General Ibrahim Babangida confirmed that Abiola won the 1993 election. And when I visited him, he told me that Abiola is being owed ₦45 billion. This man was denied the presidency, and now we learn he was also denied what is rightfully his. That is double punishment.”

Lamido directed his message through the Minister of Information, who represented President Tinubu at the book launch, saying: “Please tell him \[the President] to pay Abiola’s family the ₦45 billion. Once this is done, the June 12 chapter can be closed. It is very important.”

Beyond the political appeal, Lamido used the occasion to express deep appreciation to Allah, as well as to individuals who supported the launch of his memoir. He thanked former President Olusegun Obasanjo for writing the book’s foreword and described him as his “Boss, Guide, Leader, and Inspiration.”

“Baba, I sincerely and profoundly thank you,” he said. “May God bless you with more health, wisdom, and joy.”

Lamido also acknowledged the presence and contributions of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, whom he praised for his “professional truthfulness and patriotic service,” and the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for his commitment to religious harmony and for attending the event despite his demanding schedule.

He further thanked Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who reviewed the book, referring to him as a “MunChi comrade” and a longstanding friend, while also appreciating the editorial and organizing teams, including the media subcommittee, for making the event a success.
