Kano Revives Dorayi Compost Plant to Boost Organic Farming

The Kano State Government has reopened the Dorayi Compost Plant as part of its Waste-to-Wealth Initiative, aimed at processing waste into organic manure to support crop production and improve soil quality for farmers across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, announced the development in a statement issued on Tuesday. He said the revival of the facility was supported by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
“In February, I reaffirmed our commitment to renovate the Dorayi Compost Plant as part of our Waste-to-Wealth Initiative. Today, with the support of His Excellency, Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, I am pleased to announce its successful recommissioning,” Dr. Hashim stated.
The plant is expected to enhance waste management and support the production of organic manure for agricultural use.
“This plant will promote the use of organic manure, improve waste management, and create job opportunities for our youth. It will also contribute to better public health and improved soil quality across Kano State,” the commissioner added.
Dr. Hashim also emphasized that the compost is organic and environmentally safe. “It is worth noting that compost manure is purely organic. It enhances soil fertility while preserving its natural nutrient composition. It also supports biodiversity conservation, as it poses no harm to aquatic organisms when carried by runoff,” he said.
He described the project as part of the government’s broader environmental efforts.
“We are building a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient environment by turning waste into a valuable resource. I invite partners to join us in advancing this critical work,” he added.
