Kano Lawyers Accuse FG of Plot Against Emir Sanusi II

A group of Kano-based human rights lawyers has alleged that a political plot by the Federal Government against the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led to the cancellation of Sallah durbar festivities across Kano emirates.

In a petition submitted to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, the National Forum of Kano Indigene Lawyers also claimed that the security alert used to justify the ban lacked merit and was possibly aimed at limiting the influence of the reinstated Emir.

The police prohibited the UNESCO-recognized Kano cultural event, citing security concerns, even after the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, called off his planned parallel durbar.

Addressing journalists after submitting their letter, the leader of the lawyers, Barrister Usman Imam Tudun Wazirchi, said the ban was unnecessary.

Tudun Wazirchi stated, “If Durbars were allowed to hold in high-risk states like Borno, Katsina, and Zamfara, why not Kano?

“Even during Boko Haram’s peak, such total bans were not implemented,” the lawyers emphasized.

The lawyers accused certain individuals and political actors of spreading fear to prevent the cultural celebration linked to Emir Sanusi’s return. They argued that the ban violated cultural rights and undermined constitutional freedoms.

Referring to the recent Court of Appeal judgment that upheld Sanusi’s position, the letter warned against using law enforcement for political purposes.

The lawyers also sent their concerns to international bodies, including the UN, EU, and African Union, describing the situation as an attack on Kano’s heritage and its legitimate traditional leadership.
