Kano Judiciary Suspends Two Registrars for Abuse, Bribery, Warns Judges Over Misconduct

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission has suspended two court registrars over cases of abuse and bribery and issued warnings to two Upper Sharia Court judges for misconduct.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Kano State Judiciary, Baba Jibo Ibrahim, the disciplinary actions were announced following the Commission’s 80th meeting held on April 22, 2025.

The decisions were based on recommendations from the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee.

One of the registrars, Ibrahim Adamu, a Principal Registrar II with the High Court of Justice, was suspended without pay for six months and had his promotion delayed.

Adamu was found guilty of verbally abusing and attempting to physically assault a superior officer, violating the Kano State Civil Service Rules 2004 and Judicial Service Commission Regulations. It was also revealed that this was not his first time appearing before an investigative panel for similar acts of violence.

In a separate incident, Maigida Lawan, a Principal Registrar at the Sharia Court of Appeal, was found guilty of soliciting and receiving bribes under false pretenses.

As punishment, he was demoted from Grade Level 13 to Grade Level 12 and suspended without pay for six months.

Additionally, the Commission issued a formal warning to Judge Alkali Mansur Ibrahim of the Upper Sharia Court for using abusive language toward a litigant.

Another Upper Sharia Court judge, Alkali Nasiru Ahmad, was cautioned over the detention of a judgment debtor in a manner that suggested personal bias.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to upholding integrity within the judiciary, warning that officers found guilty of misconduct would face compulsory retirement.
