Kano Govt Sets Up Committee to Probe GSM Market Fire, Opens Relief Fund for Victims

In response to the fire that destroyed parts of the GSM Market at Farm Centre, the Kano State Government has set up a Technical Committee to investigate the incident and coordinate support efforts.

The committee was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, who said it will identify the causes of the fire, assess the damage, and recommend ways to prevent future incidents.

Speaking at the announcement, Alhaji Farouk said, “This is not the time for politics or misinformation. We urge all well-meaning Nigerians, individuals, and organizations who wish to support the affected traders to do so through the official channel established by the government.”

The committee is led by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Nasiru Sule Garo, and includes representatives from government ministries, security agencies, emergency services, the traders’ association, and the private sector.

Members include officials from the Ministry of Internal Security and Special Services, Kano State Fire Service, Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigeria Police Force, DSS, KNUPDA, Kano State Investment and Properties, KACCIMA, and local authorities. Abdulkadir Shehu AGS-HOC is the Secretary.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the government outlined the committee’s tasks: “The Committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report within one week, including a verified list of affected individuals, the causes of the fire, and practical strategies to prevent such tragedies in the future,” Waiya stated.

He said the committee will also review the market’s structure and suggest a framework based on urban safety standards.

“The Kano State Government reiterates its commitment to stand by the victims. We are determined not only to support them in the short term but to rebuild the market in a way that promotes safety, resilience, and better management,” he assured.

The committee is also responsible for managing donations and ensuring all contributions are directed to the designated bank account. Stakeholders and victims are expected to assist the committee in providing information and verifying data.
