Kano Govt. Places Immediate Ban on Live Political Programmes

The Kano State Government has placed an immediate ban on all live political programmes across media outlets in the state.
The decision was announced during a quarterly engagement meeting at the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs between state officials and media executives. The meeting was led by the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.
The ban, according to a statement signed by Sani Abba Yola, Director of Special Duties at the ministry, is “to prevent the spread of inflammatory content” that could endanger the cultural and religious harmony of the state.
“We are not out to suppress political opposition,” Comrade Waiya told the gathering of media leaders. “Our goal is to safeguard the sanctity of Kano’s cultural and religious values.”
Other resolutions were also made during the session. “Anyone appearing on media platforms for interviews must sign an undertaking to refrain from making abusive, defamatory, or culturally offensive remarks,” the statement said.
Presenters have also been instructed to avoid provocative questions or “making suggestive gestures that could lead to statements capable of defaming individuals or damaging the image of Kano State.”
Waiya said there has been a reduction in the use of abusive language on air and attributed it to ongoing engagement between the ministry and media houses.
He added that the government has launched sensitization programmes targeting political presenters, media commentators, and members of the Council of Friday Imams.
“We want to ensure messages are delivered responsibly, without defamation or any act that could undermine our state’s reputation,” Waiya explained.
