Kano Governor Settles ₦2.2 Billion Debt Left by Ganduje for Stranded Foreign Students

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has paid the outstanding tuition and accommodation fees of 84 Kano indigenes stranded in Northern Cyprus. The total amount paid exceeds N2.2 billion.
The students were initially sponsored under a foreign scholarship scheme introduced by former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. However, funding was discontinued during the administration of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, leaving the students without financial support.
They experienced difficulties such as being locked out of classrooms, evicted from accommodations, and threatened with legal action by Near East University in Cyprus due to unpaid bills.
“This administration confirms that all debts owed to Near East University in Cyprus have been cleared,” the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said in a statement on Thursday.
“A total of two billion, two hundred and forty million naira (N2,240,000,000) has been paid to secure the certificates of the students who have waited for over five years,” the statement added.
The students completed degrees in fields including MBBS, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Computer Science, and Biomedical Sciences.
The statement also noted that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed the automatic employment of the graduates into the Kano State Civil Service.
Human rights groups and diaspora communities had previously criticized the handling of the students’ situation.
“This action paves the way for the candidates to receive their certificates and begin to pursue their careers,” Dawakin Tofa added.
