Kano First-Class Graduate Turns Restaurateur, Urges Youth to Embrace Entrepreneurship

A first-class graduate from the Department of Biology Education, Northwest University Kano, Habiba Usman Hassan, has started a restaurant business after graduating in 2024.

Habiba also served as the president of the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS) during her time at the university.

Speaking to Kano Times, she said her decision to establish a restaurant was driven by the need to be self-reliant and to encourage other young graduates to consider entrepreneurship.

“I didn’t want to sit idle after graduation, waiting for a white-collar job that may never come,” she said. “I want to be an example, especially to young women, that we can create opportunities for ourselves. We shouldn’t always rely on government jobs.”

Habiba said her academic background and leadership experience gave her the confidence to run a business.

“I know how difficult the job market is, and instead of complaining, I decided to act. My restaurant is not just a business; it’s a message to my peers that we can rise with dignity through hard work and determination,” she added.

She called on the government and other stakeholders to support young entrepreneurs with training, mentorship, and access to funding.
