Kano Court Stops Work on Kano-Daura-Maradi Rail Project

The Kano State High Court has issued a restraining order halting the Kano-Daura-Maradi rail project on land in the Kuyan Ta Inna community, Kano State.

The ruling stops the Federal Government from continuing construction without meeting legal requirements, including consultation with landowners and fair compensation.

The order came after a lawsuit by the Kano Property Agent Development Association (KAFADA), representing affected residents. The Federal Ministry of Works, the Federal Ministry of Transport, and the compensation consultant are named as defendants. The suit alleges that compensation being offered is inadequate.

Usman Baito, lawyer for the plaintiffs, said the ruling highlights the need to follow legal procedures before building on the land.

“The court has reaffirmed that the rights of the Kuyan Ta Inna community must be respected,” Baito said. “Any attempt to ignore the law and deprive the community of their rights is both unlawful and unconstitutional.”

Isa Jibrin Isa, KAFADA chairman, said the community is not against the project but wants legal procedures followed. He said residents are open to talks and willing to sign a compensation agreement if it is fair and lawful.

“The people of Kuyan Ta Inna deserve justice, not exploitation,” Isa stated.

Attempts to reach Federal Government officials or the project contractor for comment were unsuccessful.
