Kano Court Jails Man for Illegal Tree Felling

A Magistrate Court sitting at Rijiyar Zaki in Kano has sentenced one Alhaji Inuwa Ayuba to two months in prison or a fine, after finding him guilty of illegally cutting down seven neem trees in Sarauniya village, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.
The case was brought to court following a tip-off received by a monitoring team from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. According to the prosecution counsel, Barrister Bahijja H. Aliyu, the team acted swiftly to apprehend Ayuba and gathered the necessary evidence, which was later presented to the court.
Barrister Aliyu explained that Ayuba’s actions violated the environmental regulations and laws set by the Kano State government, which prohibit the cutting of trees without official permission.
The court, after reviewing the evidence, convicted Ayuba and gave him the option of paying a fine or serving two months in prison. In addition, he was ordered to plant 14 neem trees as part of the penalty for his actions.
It would be recalled that the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has strengthened its Environmental, Forestry, and Pollution Control laws to curb illegal tree felling, pollution, and open defecation across the state.
Commenting on the verdict, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, praised the Ministry’s enforcement team and the judiciary for their commitment to protecting the environment.
“The conviction of this individual serves as a deterrent to others who engage in illegal activities that harm our environment,” Dr. Hashim said. “We will continue to work tirelessly to protect and preserve our natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations.”
The Ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Ismail Garba Gwammaja, also urged residents to obey environmental regulations and pollution laws, stressing the importance of reporting any cases of environmental degradation to the authorities.
