JUST IN: Police Summon Emir Sanusi Over Sallah Violence

The Nigeria Police Force has summoned the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for questioning over an incident that occurred during the recent Sallah celebrations in Kano.
The invitation, dated April 2, 2025, and bearing reference number CR:3000/FID/FHQ/ABJ/VOL59/697, was signed by CP Olajide Rufus Ibitoye on behalf of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja.
“I have the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting regarding an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebrations within your domain,” the letter stated.
The Emir is expected to appear at the Force Intelligence Department office, opposite the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
“Your presence is highly required for a thorough investigation,” the letter added.
This development follows an earlier move by the Kano State Police Command, which set up an eight-member panel to investigate the killing of a vigilante during a Sallah procession led by the Emir.
According to a statement by SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the police spokesperson in Kano, the panel was constituted despite an existing ban on durbar activities by the police.
The incident reportedly occurred when the Emir was returning to the palace after leading the Eid prayers at the Kofar Mata Eid ground on Sunday. The procession turned chaotic, resulting in violence within the Emir’s entourage.
Among those present at the Eid ground were Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other state officials.
The police have also invited Wada Isyaku, the Shamakin Kano, for questioning over alleged defiance of the ban on durbar-related events.
