Journalist Questions Kano DPO’s Death, Demands Police Clarification

A Kano-based broadcast journalist, Ibrahim Ishaq Danuwa Rano, has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the death of Rano Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Baba Ali Mohammed, urging the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, to provide explanations.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Danuwa Rano expressed concern over the lack of information regarding the events leading to the DPO’s death.

“Please, forgive me for bringing this up—I really didn’t want to ask this question, but it’s been weighing on my heart, and I can’t keep quiet any longer,” he wrote.

He questioned whether the DPO was left without support during the attack. “Is Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa suggesting that when DPO Baba Ali Mohammed was killed, there were no other police officers present? Did they all flee and abandon him in the heat of that moment?” he asked.

Rano challenged the explanation provided so far, citing standard police procedures. “To the best of my understanding, no police division functions without personnel on duty. At the very least, there should have been four officers on shift,” he said.

He noted that other security agencies such as the CID, DSS, Civil Defence, and NDLEA are usually present in local government areas.

The journalist described the reported account of the DPO defending himself alone, running out of ammunition, and trying to escape as inadequate.

“If they had truly stood by him, if they had fought alongside him, even if it cost them their lives, they would’ve done so not just for him, but for the honor and dignity of the Police Force itself. But that didn’t happen,” he said.

He also suggested the possibility of negligence or betrayal. “I honestly can’t make sense of this. My heart tells me there’s more to this story—perhaps even betrayal,” he wrote.

Danuwa Rano called for answers and a formal response: “What matters now is that in whatever investigation is ongoing—or ought to be ongoing—we need answers. The public deserves to know what became of those officers who were expected to act, but didn’t. Until then, we await a full explanation from PPRO Kiyawa.”
